This article on the floating drug delivery system (FDDS) was written with the primary goal of organizing recent literature with the fundamental process of flotation in achieving gastric retention. The two approaches taken in the development of FDDS by creating both effervescent and non-effervescent floating tablets with a buoyancy mechanism as its foundation. With a limited window for absorption in the upper gastrointestinal tract, instability in the lower intestine environment, and low solubility at higher pH levels, FDDS is a way for delivering drugs.
