Il medievalismo e la grande guerra in Italia

Medieval themes and symbolism featured heavily in the public discourse during the First World War. The case of Italy, however, is somewhat unique since the prevalence of medievalism was much lower than that of the other belligerent nations (as discussed in the previous essay Il medievalismo e la grande guerra [Medievalism and the Great War], «Studi storici. Rivista trimestrale dell’Istituto Gramsci», 56 (2015), 1, pp. 49-78). Medievalism - a key mythical driver for political culture during the Romanticism of the nineteenth century - only played an important role in Italy for the Catholic Church, who saw medieval civilization as a role model for contemporary society. On the contrary, the values of the Middle Ages were refuted or even absent in the rhetoric of the times. Indeed, Futurism frowned upon anything resembling “traditionalism,” the celebration of Italian unification (the Risorgimento) created new contemporary heroes, and there was a resurgence of the myth of Ancient Rome, calling for a new united and powerful nation. Durante la prima guerra mondiale è presente nel discorso pubblico l’uso di temi e simboli medievali. Il caso italiano è tuttavia peculiare, poiché l’incidenza del medievalismo è inferiore rispetto a quanto si riscontra in altri paesi belligeranti (sui quali si veda il precedente saggio Il medievalismo e la grande guerra, «Studi storici. Rivista trimestrale dell’Istituto Gramsci», 56 (2015), 1, pp. 49-78). Il medievalismo – che era stato un mitomotore fondamentale per le culture politiche durante l’Ottocento romantico – in Italia continua a rivestire un ruolo di rilievo soltanto nell’ambito cattolico, che riconosce nella civiltà medievale un modello per la società contemporanea. Viceversa, il valore del Medioevo è rifiutato o è assente nei linguaggi retorici concorrenziali rappresentati dal futurismo, che condanna ogni «passatismo», dalla celebrazione del Risorgimento, che lo ha efficacemente sostituito con gli eroi contemporanei, e dal recupero del mito di Roma, chiamata a rappresentare la nuova nazione unita e potente come quella antica
