Earth fissure structures are a common type of geohazard associated with geotechnical surface ruptures that can occur almost anywhere on the ground surface due to a variety of different mechanisms, and in most cases, these hazardous cracks have resulted in severe damage to infrastructure. Investigation of the structural characteristics of fissures in an active tectonic area (such as Birjand in eastern Iran) can improve our understanding of connections between the fissures and structural geology.
