Approaches to rural areas and productive systems in Germany are briefly mapped out, as well as the relevance and ambiguities of using a framework for analysis that combines both a spatial and sectoral perspective. Then the manufacturing function of rural areas is explored at national level, showing patterns of regional differentiation and contrasting manufacturing dynamics between old and new 'Länder' over the last decade.
