Rural areas and the legacy of manufacturing: Becoming a wasteland or an industrial heritage? The socioeconomic changes in rural areas of Germany are examined in relation to industry's legacy there. In eastern Germany, rural areas are torn between a massive, rapid loss of industry and a new rural development model that values local resources. This tension revolves around manufacturing: should the industrial past in rural areas be erased or developed?
