: Projectile experiments with fork-based points made of reindeer antler

National audienceIn January 2003 a projectile experiment has been performed in the Musée du Malgré-Tout (Treignes, Viroinval, Belgium), involving the use of fork-based antler points as projectile tips. Our goals were to test the performance of these points as weapons elements, and to record diagnostic patterns of breakage. The 371 upper Magdalenian fork-based points form the cave site of Isturitz (Saint-Martin-d'Arberoue, Pyrénées-Atlantiques), kept at the Musée des Antiquités Nationales (Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Yvelines) were used for archaeological comparisons. 42 points were manufactured from reindeer antler ; 21 were hafted to arrows shot with a bow, and the other 21 to spears thrown with a spearthrower. The same hafting technique was used for all projectiles. Both bow and spearthrower were used, because the Isturitz upper Magdalenian industry did not provide any direct evidence (e.g., spearthrower hooks) concerning the modes of projectile delivery available at that time. The targets were two male calf carcasses weighting 30 kg, shot at a distance of 10-13 meters. Shots in the hide, abdomen or thoracic region of the animals caused no damage to the points. However, when the projectiles hit a harder obstacle — such as a robust bone or the frozen topsoil — a significant difference appeared between spear- and arrowpoints. On arrowpoints impact damage was very rare and limited to the tip, whereas the majority of the spearpoints sustained bending fractures that broke their distal part and/or their forked base. This contrast is probably due to the greatly differing dimensions, mass, and flight behavior of the two projectile types. Examination of the archaeological points revealed an abundance of proximal and distal bending fractures, some of which match our experimental spearpoint fractures closely. We can therefore confirm the functional attribution of fork-based points as projectile tips, and suggest that they were more probably hafted on spearthrower-launched projectiles. However, a new experiment will be necessary to investigate several remaining discrepancies between the archaeological and experimental breakage patterns.Nous exposons ici les premiers résultats d'une séance de tir expérimental de pointes à base fourchue en bois de renne, effectuée pour tester l'utilisation de ces objets comme armatures de projectile et obtenir des fractures caractéristiques d'utilisation. Notre corpus archéologique de référence est la série des 371 pointes à base fourchue magdaléniennes d'Isturitz (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) conservée au Musée des Antiquités Nationales. 42 pointes à base fourchue en bois de renne ont été fabriquées, la moitié d'entre elles étant ensuite emmanchées sur des flèches tirées à l'arc, les autres étant fixées sur des sagaies destinées à être lancées au propulseur. Les cibles utilisées étaient des corps de veaux mâles de 30 kg, situés à une distance de tir de 10 à 13 mètres. L'étude des fractures d'utilisation montre une nette différence entre les pointes de flèche et les pointes de sagaie. Alors que sur les premières les dommages sont rares et d'ampleur très réduite, les pointes de sagaie ont pour la plupart subi des fractures par flexion affectant la partie distale et/ou la fourche. Ce contraste peut sans doute être attribué aux différences dans les dimensions, la masse et le comportement en vol des deux types de projectiles. La comparaison entre le référentiel expérimental et les fractures présentes sur les pointes archéologiques permet de confirmer l'identification des pointes à base fourchue comme pointes de projectile, probablement fixées sur des sagaies tirées au propulseur.
