International audienceIn this article, I study newspaper clips collected by Flaubert in his preparatory files for Bouvard et Pécuchet and address the reasons for their selection and the part they may have played in the "copy", should the second volume of the novel have been written. I distinguish between the articles that provide pure documentation (eg popular science articles), those that offer examples of stupidity or curious anecdotes and those which help drawing a self-portrait of nineteenth century media life.
