Like all general questions capable of being treated more or less abstractly, it has now and then interested a thinker ever since there has been some modicum of civilization. Though considerable literature exists on problems of population, great difficulties face the investigator who sets out to examine the population situation in any specified area. These difficulties are not only from inadequate factual knowledge and quantitative data, but also from shortcomings of the theories of population which have so far been constructed.
