Oligonychus ununguis (ACARI: TETRANYCHIDAE): PLAGA DEL CIPRÉS (Cupressus lusitanica MILL.) EN TIERRAS ALTAS, CHIRIQUÍ, PANAMÁ

Cypress (Cupressus lusitanica), is a conifer frequently used as an ornamental and living fence, among other uses; which is affected by the spruce mite, Oligonychus ununguis (Jacobi, 1905) (Acari: Tetranychidae), whose damage consists of deteriorating the foliage. In Tierras Altas, the main vegetable-producing area in Panama, it is common to find cypress close to crops, in addition to being used as a Christmas tree. Recently, affectations have been observed in the foliage of this plant, so the objective of this work was to identify the causal agent of said affectation in the area and to know the community of arthropods associated with cypress. To do this, seven locations were visited in the Tierras Altas District, where the damage was detected. Additionally, in Cerro Punta, 25 random arthropod samplings were carried out in living cypress fences near horticultural crops. Direct observation, photographic record and collection of foliage and specimens were carried out for their analysis at laboratory. As results, the causal agent of cypress foliage damage was O. ununguis and the arthropod community is represented by at least 27 taxa in Cerro Punta.El ciprés (Cupressus lusitanica), conífera utilizada frecuentemente como ornamental y cerca viva, entre otros usos; es afectada por el ácaro del abeto, Oligonychus ununguis (Jacobi, 1905) (Acari: Tetranychidae), cuyo daño consiste en deteriorar el follaje. En Tierras Altas, principal zona productora de hortalizas en Panamá es frecuente encontrar ciprés próximo a cultivos, además de que es empleado como árbol de navidad. Recientemente, se han observado afectaciones en el follaje de esta planta, por lo que el objetivo del presente trabajo consistió en identificar el agente causal de dicha afectación en el área y conocer la comunidad de artrópodos asociados. Para ello, se visitaron siete localidades en el Distrito de Tierras Altas, donde se detectó el daño. Adicionalmente, en Cerro Punta se realizaron 25 muestreos aleatorios de artrópodos, en cercas vivas de ciprés cercanas a cultivos hortícolas. Se realizó observación directa, registro fotográfico y colecta de follaje y especímenes para su análisis en el laboratorio. Como resultado, se confirmó que el agente causal del daño en el follaje del ciprés es el ácaro O. ununguis y la comunidad de artrópodos está representada por al menos 27 taxa en Cerro Punta
