The 19th century was a highly conservative century, despite all the advances it brought. While there were significant gender changes during this century, official discourses strived to demonstrate women’s supposed inferiority to men. Specifically, the change from the 19th to the 20th century was a hive of cultural manifestations that reflected the anxieties of the moment. This paper aims to approach the image-gender-disease triad through the convergence of knowledge and its uses, largely propagated by visuality.
