The first part of the article analyses how the idea of disability has evolved over the course of human history. Further on, it is analysed how the current social model of disability has been applied at the international, European and national level. As will be seen, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is especially important in this context. One of the major novelties introduced by the Convention is the idea of universal accessibility. This idea, together with the legal concept of “reasonable accommodation”, is gaining great importance in the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities.
