The ground beetle populations under 60% Garry Oak forest cover at Mary Hill and Rocky Point on the Southwest fringe of Vancouver Island were assessed in September/ October 2003 using pitfall traps. Two groups of five pitfall traps were set out at each location and collected weekly. The dominant species recovered was Pterostichus algidus which n1ade up more than 75% of the insects caught at Mary Hill and more than 90% of the insects caught at Rocky Point. Thirteen species of carabid beetles were recorded
