Ever since 1523, when Martin Luther and his co-workers began to write German Psalms for the congregation, the hymn and spiritual song has taken its place in the congregational life; next to the preaching of the Word and the teaching of the Catechism, there is nothing so dear to the Lutheran as the rich heritage of the singing church
