International audienceComparing myths to living organisms that are born, live and die, is not new. Like natural organisms, myths evolve through descent with modification. What is new is the statistical framework of analysis of this type of narratives - and more precisely of their different versions - using algorithms usually used by biologists. Our results show that beyond the multiple forms certain myths can take, their diversity is geographically structured, with an organisation that can be linked to past migrations, some of which dating back to the Stone Age.
