International audienceIf politeness is connected to positive values, and if impoliteness is to be considered as socially inappropriate, we should then consider who fixes what is correct and what is not. As linguists have recently highlighted, historically the « ideology of politeness » emerged at the same time as the codification and standardization of the English language.
