Nonsense inscriptions in Britannia?

Tra le iscrizioni ritrovate nella fonte del tempio di Sulis Minerva a Bath – i cui testi comprendono per lo più richieste alla divinità di punire il colpevole di furti subiti (prayers for justice) - un piccolo numero è stato etichettato come Illiterate Texts (Pseudo-Inscriptions). In questo lavoro vengono discusse le diverse caratteristiche e le finalità tra queste cosiddette Pseudo-Inscriptions e quelle ben più numerose presenti nelle iscrizioni vascolari attiche. L’analisi di tutto il corpus mostra un continuum che prevede ai due estremi una capacità di scrittura pienamente acquisita nei testi ben costruiti e un analfabetismo / illetteratismo strutturale, come nel nostro caso, passando per casi sfumati tra alfabetismo strutturale e funzionale, connotati dalla diversa abilità di usare in modo efficiente la scrittura nelle situazioni della vita quotidiana. Among the inscriptions discovered in the (sacred) spring of the temple of Sulis Minerva in Bath – most of which deal with requests to the deity to punish the perpetrator of the thefts (prayers for justice) – a few have generally been considered to be “Illiterate Texts” (Pseudo-Inscriptions) / have been identified as. The focus of this paper is therefore to discuss the distinctive features and purposes of both these so-called Pseudo-Inscriptions and the more widely attested inscriptions on Attic pottery (vascular inscriptions). A systematic analysis of the whole corpus shows a continuum between two extremities in terms of writing skills and “proficiency levels”, from “structural illiteracy” – as in the main cases under discussion – to “structural and functional literacy” showing differing degrees of writing skills in the use of familiar expression concerning everyday life, to fully acquired writing skills in well-constructed texts
