Anti-gentrification resistance and its representations in Hoxton/Shoreditch in London from 2008 to 2019

Cette thèse se présente comme une monographie des résistances à la gentrification, deux concepts généralement associés, mais encore jamais étudiés dans le champ disciplinaire de la civilisation britannique. Elle se concentre sur un quartier à deux pas de la City de Londres, considéré comme l’emblème de la gentrification au Royaume-Uni. La particularité de ce quartier réside dans des vagues de gentrification successives et concomitantes résultant en la cohabitation de groupes socio-économiques très divers (entre opulence et poches de pauvreté). Cette étude interroge l’applicabilité de la typologie des résistances de Cindi Katz (résistance, résilience et reworking), encore rarement référée dans la littérature, à ce quartier. L’originalité de ce travail est d’incrémenter cette typologie à travers d’une part, la dimension sociale et d’autre part, les représentations des résistances. Allant au-delà de l’analyse des classes populaires, cette étude met en lumière la dimension poly-sociale des résistances, impliquant parfois des classes moyennes, voire paradoxalement des classes aisées, comme c’est le cas face à une nouvelle forme de super-gentrification. Faisant le choix de dépasser la simple étude des mobilisations, cette thèse analyse la gentrification et ses résistances à travers différentes représentations : journalistiques, artistiques et politiques. Cette étude repose sur une enquête de terrain, composée d’une quarantaine d’entretiens semi-directifs et de questionnaires. Elle comporte également une analyse de contenu de la presse locale et mobilise d’autres sources primaires, comme les documents d’associations/mobilisations ou des productions artistiques (films, photographies, etc.). Cette thèse s’applique à montrer dans quelle mesure l’hétérogénéité (en particulier poly-sociale) des résistances à la gentrification et leurs représentations à Hoxton/Shoreditch redéfinissent le concept de résistance à la gentrification.This thesis is a monograph on resistance to gentrification, two concepts that have never been analysed jointly in the field of British studies. It focuses on a neighbourhood located right next to the City in London and considered as the epitome of gentrification in the United Kingdom. The specificity of this neighbourhood lies in the successive and simultaneous waves of gentrification which have resulted in the cohabitation of various socio-economic groups (with both affluence and pockets of poverty). This work examines whether Cindi Katz’s typology of resistance (resistance, resilience and reworking), although rarely mentioned in academic literature, is relevant in the case of anti-gentrification resistance in Hoxton/Shoreditch. The originality of this study is to expand on Katz’s typology by looking at, on the one hand, the social dimension and, on the other hand, the resistance’s representations. Going beyond the analysis of working classes, this thesis sheds light on the multi-social dimension of resistance, which sometimes includes the middle classes, or even, paradoxically, the upper classes, as is the case when faced with a form of super-gentrification. This thesis also goes beyond the mere study of mass movements to examine anti-gentrification resistance through different representations: in the press and in the artistic and political fields. This work was mainly based on fieldwork which was composed of about forty semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. It also drew on the analysis of a wide corpus, composed of press articles, documents related to various associations and campaigns, as well as artistic productions (films, photographs, etc.). This thesis aims to show in what way the social heterogeneity of anti-gentrification resistance and its representations in Hoxton/Shoreditch help redefine the mere concept of anti-gentrification resistance
