Analyticity : a matter of conventions ?

L’objet de ce travail de thèse est d’examiner la possibilité de donner un sens à la distinction classique entre l’analytique et le synthétique. Bien qu’intuitive de prime abord, celle-ci tend à être reléguée au rang de reliquat d’un projet philosophique désormais dépassé : le conventionnalisme logique. Il s’agit donc ici à la fois d’analyser les objections historiques classiques contre cette notion, mais également les propositions qui ont pu émerger par la suite, pour tenter de redéfinir ces notions. Cet examen soulève alors une interrogation : les difficultés à rendre compte des énoncés analytiques ne proviennent-elles pas d’une caractérisation égarante, à savoir le fait d’être « vrai en vertu de la signification » ? Pour ce faire, un retour historique sur le débat entre Carnap et Quine autour du conventionnalisme (chapitre 1) a été esquissé en vue de contextualiser les tentatives contemporaines de redéfinition de l’analyticité comme analyticité épistémique (chapitre 2) ou comme analyticité métaphysique (chapitre 3). Afin d’examiner l’actualité et la pertinence d’un projet visant à penser une distinction entre l’analytique et la synthétique, une analyse des arguments externalistes en faveur de son rejet a dû être menée (chapitre 4). Les difficultés posées par les redéfinitions contemporaines ainsi que l’examen des critiques externalistes ont ainsi permis de faire émerger le coeur de la difficulté : si cela a un sens de parler d’énoncés analytiques, cela ne peut être au sens où il s’agirait d’énoncés « vrais en vertu de leur signification ». Ce n’est qu’en comprenant leur statut spécifique et en quoi, ils ne sont pas à proprement parler « vrais » que l’on peut espérer parvenir à une caractérisation efficiente (chapitre 5).The purpose of this work is to discuss the possibility to define the analytic/synthetic distinction. Despite its intuitiveness, we tend to consider it as an old fashion device belonging to an out-of-date philosophical project : logical conventionalism. In order to examine the correctness of this point of view, we have to analyze the traditional objections against this notion but also the new attempts to characterize it. These two points raise a question : are the difficulties to define the analytic and the synthetic caused by a misleading characterization i.e. “being true in virtue of meaning” ? Our enquiry starts with an historical review of the Carnap-Quine debate about logical conventionalism (chapter 1) in order to contextualize the contemporary attempts at redefining the distinction i.e. as an epistemic one (chapter 2) or a metaphysical one (chapter 3). To evaluate the significance of a philosophical project based on the possibility of defining the analytic/synthetic distinction, we had to face the objections from externalist semantics (chapter 4). Then, the challenges encountered by the epistemic and the metaphysical conceptions and the review of the externalist objections suggested that the difficulties emerge from a common origin. If we can make sense of the notion of “analytic statements”, it cannot be explained by the fact of being “true in virtue of meaning”. On the contrary, we must be careful about their specific role and about the fact that they are not, literally speaking, true, if we want to give them a correct characterization
