Alma Vause (1920 – 2001) earned her bachelors in nursing from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee and her master’s degree from Teacher’s College. After working in public health in Mississippi, Tennessee, Washington, DC, and North Carolina, Vause moved to Florida where she was employed by Polk County Health Department and later served as a state consultant and nursing director. In this oral history interview, Vause recalls her career in public health nursing and the development of midwifery in Florida.
