Receptory jsou eukaryotické membránové proteiny, uzpůsobené v průběhu evoluce k transformaci signálu z jednoho prostředí do druhého. Některé druhy receptorů rozpoznávají intracelulární signály, jako např. receptor pro inositol-3-fosfát (Inositol-3-phoshpate receptor; IP3R) nebo jaderné receptory vazající např. gonádové hormony. Naprostá většina zástupců patří mezi však receptory rozpoznávající a procesující extracelulární signály, které jsou sdruženy do rozsáhlé rodiny receptorů spřažených s G- proteiny (G-protein coupled receptors, GPCRs).
