Economics and Environment – Modeling Global Linkages

Om internationale productieketens en de bijbehorende milieueffecten te analyseren zijn internationale multisectorale databases nodig.Dit proefschrift presenteert een methodologie voor het construeren van internationale aanbods- en gebruikstabellen en geconsolideerde supranationale aanbods- en gebruikstabellen die intern consistent en juist geprijsd zijn. Voor beide tabeltypes wordt er onderzocht in hoe verre het gebruik van deze tabellen de schattingen van de effecten verbetert ten opzichte van de resultaten die verkregen worden met meer simplistische modellen of op basis van meer geaggregeerde data. De verschillen blijken substantieel te zijn. Om het belang van internationale relaties te benadrukken wordt de internationale aanbods- en gebruikstabel ook gebruikt om te analyseren wat de import afhankelijkheid is van landen met betrekking tot ruwe materialen. De afhankelijkheid van landen van de toevoer van ruwe materialen vanuit een groep snelgroeiende economieën zou voor problemen kunnen zorgen in de toekomst.Analyzing global supply chains and their associated environmental impacts requires the availability of international multi-sector databases. This thesis presents a methodology for constructing international supply-use tables and consolidated supra-national supply-use tables that are internally consistent and use the correct prices. For both types of tables, it is investigated to what extent using these tables improves the estimation of impacts compared to results obtained from using more simplistic models or more aggregated data. The differences are substantial. To underscore the importance of international relations, the international supply-use model is also used to analyze the raw materials import dependency of countries. The dependency of countries on raw materials supplied by a small set of fast growing economies may cause problems in the future
