Geconjugeerde polymeren zijn plastics die elektriciteit kunnen geleiden. Ze worden toegepast in LEDjes (licht-emitterende diodes) en zonnecellen. Exciton-processen spelen een belangrijke rol bij de werking van deze toepassingen. Verbeteren van de prestaties ervan vereist een fysisch begrip van excitonmigratie en -uitdoving in dunne films van geconjugeerde polymeren. Het belangrijkste doel van het proefschrift van Denis Markov is het vergroten van het inzicht in de intrinsieke eigenschappen van exciton-processen
