Bij lange, bemande ruimtemissies, bijvoorbeeld naar Mars, kan gevaar schuilen in de kleinste hoekjes. Dat blijkt uit het promotieonderzoek van Sandra van Tongeren. Zij stelt onder meer vast dat al bij kortdurende ruimtemissies opmerkelijke veranderingen optreden in de hoeveelheden en soorten micro-organismen in en op het lichaam van de ruimtevaarder. Van Tongeren analyseerde monsters die werden genomen tijdens korte ruimtemissies naar de Russische Zvezda-module van het ISS, van 2004 tot 2007. Ze gebruikte hiertoe zowel conventionele kweekmethoden als moleculaire technieken.
