Ancient marble statuary was originally painted in rich polychrome. For more than thirty years archaeologists, restorers and physicist-chemists, taking advantage of the improvement of examination and analysis tools, have sought and studied the traces of colors that may have survived on the statues. The results of this research go against the heritage of ancient statuary, of which the whiteness of the marble seems to be constitutive. In other words, the dichotomy between a rediscovered polychromy and a heritage traditionally recognized as achromatic would be a source of tension, both cognitive and affective.
