Écrire et réécrire un patrimoine : Approche communicationnelle de la statuaire antique, entre blancheur idéelle et polychromie originelle

Ancient marble statuary was originally painted in rich polychrome. For more than thirty years archaeologists, restorers and physicist-chemists, taking advantage of the improvement of examination and analysis tools, have sought and studied the traces of colors that may have survived on the statues. The results of this research go against the heritage of ancient statuary, of which the whiteness of the marble seems to be constitutive. In other words, the dichotomy between a rediscovered polychromy and a heritage traditionally recognized as achromatic would be a source of tension, both cognitive and affective. Our research questions the adjustment of these tensions from the perspective of patrimonial rewriting: to what extent is the already patrimonial object written and rewritten? This research is therefore part of the extension of studies on heritage as a form of writing, and more particularly questions its dynamics. The field study focuses on the museum and the object of museum mediation. A communicational approach to this mediation required the construction of a tripartite study: the study of the mediation in the exhibition, its conception and its reception. A semiotic analysis of several temporary and permanent exhibitions, as well as a discursive analysis of the words of visitors and museum professionals, allowed us to understand what is playing out in this heritage rewriting. Finally, this manuscript supports the following thesis: the weight of a first heritage writing prevents the lasting transformation of this "cultural being". The resulting inscriptions and the extent of their reappropriation have determined the modalities of exhibiting the objects. Conversely, the material object remaining colorless itself constrains the writing of the devices in which it is inserted. The naturalization of a figuration resulting from a first writing generates a shared denial of its languages. Therefore, it is a double writing that we are observing, not a rewriting. Two heritage texts coexist more than they overlap. The metaphor of a heritage thaumatrope then allows us to account for the articulation of two idealities - one white, the other colored.La statuaire antique en marbre était originellement peinte d’une riche polychromie. Depuis plus d’une trentaine d’années les archéologues, les restaurateurs et les physiciens-chimistes, tirant profit du perfectionnement d’outils d’examen et d’analyse, cherchent et étudient les traces de couleurs qui ont pu perdurer sur les statues. Les résultats de ces recherches vont à l’encontre de la patrimonialité de la statuaire antique, dont la blancheur du marbre semble être constitutive. Autrement dit, la dichotomie entre une vive polychromie redécouverte et un patrimoine traditionnellement reconnu comme achromatique serait source de tensions, cognitives et affectives. Notre recherche interroge la gestion de ces tensions sous l’angle de la réécriture patrimoniale : dans quelle mesure l’objet déjà patrimonialisé s’écrit et se réécrit-il ? Cette recherche s’inscrit ainsi dans le prolongement des études sur la patrimonialisation comme forme d’écriture, et questionne plus particulièrement la dynamique de cette dernière. L’étude de terrain a pour cadre le musée et pour objet la médiation muséale. Une approche communicationnelle de cette médiation a exigé la construction d’une étude tripartite : l’étude de la médiation mise en place, de sa conception et de sa réception. Une analyse sémiotique de plusieurs expositions temporaires et permanentes, ainsi qu’une analyse discursive des propos des visiteurs et des professionnels de musées, nous a permis de saisir ce qui se joue dans cette réécriture patrimoniale. In fine, le présent manuscrit soutient la thèse suivante : le poids d’une première écriture patrimoniale empêche la transformation pérenne de cet être culturel. Les inscriptions qui en résultent et l’étendue de leurs réappropriation sont fixé les modalités d’exposition des objets. Inversement, l’objet matériel demeurant sans couleur contraint lui-même l’écriture des dispositifs dans lesquels il s’insère. La naturalisation d’une figuration issue d’une première écriture engendre un déni partagé de ses langages. Par conséquent, c’est une double écriture que nous observons, non pas une réécriture. Deux textes patrimoniaux cohabitent davantage qu’ils ne se superposent.
