Wacław Kamil Rechniewski – Pioneer of electrical machines and transformers

The paper presents the results of previous studies on a little-known eminent electrician working mainly in France, Wenceslas Kamil Rechniewski, scientist, inventor and designer of DC electrical machines and transformers. He was born in Kowrow, Russia, in 1861 and died in 1924 in Paris. After graduation from ETH Zurich he led the company Postel-Vinay in Paris. As a designer of Société d'Eclairage Électrique company he created an entire family of DC machines, known as Systema Rechniewski, for which he was awarded the gold medal at the Exposition Unverselle in Paris in 1889. Rechniewski was a leading expert in the world's first electrical magazine "La Lumiére Électrique" founded in 1872, where he published the articles on DC machines and transformers. In 1893, he worked in the USA, for Thomson-Houston company, where B. Abdank Abakanowicz was one of the executives. In recognition of his achievements Rechniewski was awarded in 1922 Knight class, and two years later Officer class of the Legion of Honor. He died due to a heart attack and was buried in Batignolles cemetery in Paris.Artykuł stanowi biografię jednego z najwybitniejszych pionierów elektryfikacji kolei w Polsce doc. inż. Stanisława Plewako. Ukazuje jego wkład w rozwój trakcji elektrycznej PKP na przestrzeni jej rozwoju. Przedstawiono w nim jego dokonania projektowe i techniczne, jak również teoretyczne i dydaktyczne związane z kształceniem inżynierów trakcji elektrycznej. Szczególnie interesujące są prowadzone przez niego w okresie międzywojennym studia europejskich systemów trakcji elektrycznej i taboru. W połowie lat 30. XX w. umożliwiły transfer nowoczesnej technologii do polskiego kolejnictwa
