UIDB/00657/2020 UIDP/00657/2020La pérdida de don Beltrán is one of the most iconic romances (traditional Spanish ballads) of the Carolingian cycle. It has been associated with an episode of the Battle of Roncevaux and is possibly derived from a chanson de geste circulating in oral tradition. It tells the story of an veteran solider that returns to the battlefield in search of his son's body. The ballad was very popular during the 16th and the 17th centuries, transmitted orally and in manuscript and print sources. Moreover, many writers of that time made adaptations of or allusions to the ballad.
