This article presents the findings from a small-scale, original, empirical study, exploring the role of social workers in the decision-making process around the allocation of pupil premium plus for looked after children. This is part of a wider doctoral study looking at the planning, use and monitoring of pupil premium plus. Qualitative data was gathered via in-depth semi-structured interviews with five social workers with experience of working with looked after children and their schools. Participants’ well-being was a priority and so every effort was made to ensure that they were fully informed about the study, and that they were not distressed by the questions nor how they were asked.
