This article examines the transition from war to peace in Finland between 1944 and 1945 from the perspective of the Finnish press. It argues that the culturally constructed and symbolically ordered narratives of “survival”, “sacrifice” and “self-control” made up a normative framework in which the meaning of Finland’s post-war transition from war to peace was given. In addition, the framework offered the Finns moral guidelines and lessons from the past as what to do in order to successfully return to peace.
