Russell's theory of relation is usually conceived as the result ofthe logical and ontological analysis of the notion of order. This article aims at presentinganother genealogy, that focuses on magnitudes and vectors. We firstlyshow that the notion of relation is used for the first time in 1897 as a means toreformulate the hegelian dialectic of quantites and qualities. We secondly outlinethat this conception, around 1898-1899, is the subject of a mathematical formalisation,that is completely independent of the theory of relation and that isexclusively founded on vectorial algebras.
