In 2020, malaria remains a major public health problem. Despite major scientific advances, it is still responsible for more than 400,000 deaths each year, mainly among children in Sub-Saharan Africa. Cerebral malaria is one of the most severe forms of malaria. Its physiopathology is complex, involving adhesion of Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes to the vascular endothelium in the brain. This mechanism leads to obstruction of blood flow, local inflammation, alteration of the blood-brain barrier and a range of cellular responses aiming to resolve the neuroinflammation process.
