The purpose of this project is to investigate the properties of nanocellulose, and its application in nanocomposites and advanced functional materials. In order to achieve a synergistic reinforcing and cross-linking effect across the interface between hydrophilic nanocellulose and a hydrophobic rubber matrix, active thiol groups (-SH) were introduced at the reducing end of cellulose nanofibers (CNF) while preserving the hydroxyl (-OH) on the surface, thus forming a stable percolation network in the nanocomposites.
