The fault levels might exceed the capacities of the components of the network ensuring the protection in a near future. Costly updates of the power grids are required to meet this increase of the fault current levels. One response to this issue is the resistive-type Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (R-SFCL). Almost electrically invisible in normal operation, it becomes intrinsically dissipative in the event of a fault.
