The oxidation behavior of C/SiC composites has been investigated on the basis of mass loss kinetics, morphological changes induced by oxidation and tensile properties variations. In a first step, the microstructure of the carbon fibers coated with a pyrocarbon has been correlated to the oxidation kinetics of the fibrous reinforcement and its local degradations in oxidizing environment. Then, the mechanisms responsible for the oxidation kinetics of the 2D C/SiC composites as weil as their morphological changes induced by oxidation have been determined.
