Charlotte Maguire Oral History Interview

Dr. Charlotte Maguire (1918 – 2014) was born in Orlando, Florida and earned her MD from the University of Arkansas. She was a pioneer for women in medicine and was the first woman in Florida to establish a private practice in pediatrics, open a pediatrics clinic, and be elected president of the Florida Pediatric Society. During this oral history interview, Dr. Maguire discusses her career as a physician and administrator. She describes her time in Florida as chief of staff for the Children\u27s Home Society, director of the Florida Crippled Children\u27s Commission, and as chief of the Pediatrics Department at Mercy Hospital in Orlando. Dr. Maguire recounts her move to Washington, D.C., and her experience with the federal government as assistant regional director for the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare and as assistant secretary of Health and Scientific Affairs in the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. Finally, Dr. Maguire recalls moving back to Florida and working in state government as medical services coordinator for the Health and Rehabilitative Services Department
