Vorgestellt wird die Intellektuelle Harriet Martineau (1802-1876), die sich in etwa zeitgleich mit den so genannten Gründervätern der Soziologie (Auguste Comte (1798 -1857), John Stuart Mill (1806-1873), Karl Marx (1818-1883), Herbert Spencer (1820-1903)) mit den Folgen der (früh) kapitalistischen Entwicklung auf die gesellschaftliche Verfasstheit auseinandergesetzt hat. Dabei erweist sie sich als eine prominente Denkerin und Wissenschaftlerin der Moderne, deren theoriegeleiteten methodischen Überlegungen auch heute noch ausgesprochen interessant sind und deren empirische Befunde nach wie vor Aufmerksamkeit einfordern sollten.
