Harriet Martineau (1802–1876) war eine britische Autorin, Sozialkritikerin, Soziologin, Ökonomin und Übersetzerin. Zu ihren zahlreichen Werken zählt eine Übersetzung von Comtes Hauptwerk, die 1853 unter dem Titel The Positive Philosophy of Auguste Comte. Freely Translated and Condensed by Harriet Martineau erschien. Mit ihrer kurzen und leicht verständlichen Version trug sie maßgeblich zu Comtes Popularität bei; dennoch ist sie heute weitgehend unbekannt.
