Design-ajattelun hyödyntäminen yrityksen sisäisten startup-yritysten tuotekehityksessä

Product development in early-stage startups is challenging due to their limited resources, short runways and uncertain environments. Approaches such as Lean Startup have been introduced to tackle these challenges, but still to this date, most of the startup initiatives fail. During the past few decades, the academic and business worlds have recognized the value of Design Thinking in innovation work. Although the benefits of Design Thinking have been widely researched in the context of corporations, research about the benefits of Design Thinking for startups remains limited. This research studied how Design Thinking could be utilized to improve the product development work in early-stage startups. Furthermore, the thesis took the perspective of corporate startups, and studied also the role of the corporate parent in introducing Design Thinking to startups. More specifically, this thesis examined especially the product development work occurring in the early stages of the startups’ lifespan. The thesis was conducted as a qualitative research consisting of a theoretical review and 8 interviews with corporate startups from the case company. The data analysis combined the Gioia methodology and a case study. The results indicate that utilizing Design Thinking would be highly beneficial for corporate startups. In fact, the product development work in corporate startups is already to some degree in line with the principles of Design Thinking. The corporate parent can take an active role in facilitating the utilization of Design Thinking by providing training and support to the startups. Design Thinking can be introduced to startups especially as a process, a set of principles, tools and ”innovation lenses”. The thesis contributes to theory by introducing an entirely new model for utilizing Design Thinking in corporate startups and gives practical instructions for corporate startups in introducing Design Thinking to their product development work.Tuotekehitys startup-yrityksissä on haastavaa niiden epävarman toimintaympäristön sekä rajallisten resurssien ja rahoituksen vuoksi. Menetelmiä kuten Lean Startup on kehitetty ratkomaan näitä tuotekehityksen haasteita, mutta siitäkin huolimatta suurin osa startup-hankkeista epäonnistuu. Viime vuosikymmeninä tutkijat ja yritykset ovat tunnistaneet design-ajattelun hyödyt yritysten innovaatiotyössä. Vaikka design-ajattelun hyötyjä on tutkittu laajasti suuremmissa yrityksissä, design-ajattelun hyötyjä startup-yrityksille ei ole tunnistettu samaan tapaan. Tämä diplomityö tutki, miten design-ajattelua voitaisiin hyödyntää alkuvaiheen startup-yritysten tuotekehityksessä. Diplomityö keskittyy erityisesti startup-yrityksiin, jotka ovat syntyneet suurempien yritysten alaisuudessa, ja tutkii design-ajattelun roolia näiden startup-yritysten tuotekehityksen alkuvaiheissa. Diplomityö on toteutettu laadullisena tutkimuksena, ja se koostuu kirjallisuuskatsauksesta, sekä empiirisestä tutkimuksesta, johon osallistui kahdeksan startup-yritystä kohdeyrityksen alaisuudesta. Tutkimustavassa on yhdistelty Gioia-menetelmää ja tapaustutkimusta. Tulosten perusteella yritysten alaisuudessa toimivien startup-yritysten suosimat toimintatavat ovat jo nykyisellään melko linjassa design-ajattelun periaatteiden kanssa. Tulosten perusteella on kuitenkin selkeää, että design-ajattelusta on merkittäviä hyötyjä startup-yrityksille, ja että sen roolia tulisi kasvattaa tuotekehityksessä entisestään. Emoyrityksen tulisi kouluttaa ja tukea startup-yrityksiä design-ajattelun käyttöönotossa. Design-ajattelua voidaan hyödyntää startupeissa prosessin, periaatteiden, työkalujen ja ”innovaatiolinssien” tasolla. Diplomityö kontribuoi alan tutkimukseen esittelemällä uuden mallin design-ajattelun hyödyntämiseen startupeissa. Lisäksi diplomityö tarjoaa käytännön ohjeistukset yritysten alaisille startupeille ja niiden emoyrityksille design-ajattelun tuomisesta osaksi startupien tuotekehitystä
