Can desertification be mapped? Lights and shadows of a challenging task

La desertificación es un fenómeno complejo con múltiples caras. Han existido numerosos intentos por cartografiarla. Sin embargo, ninguna de las aproximaciones se ha consolidado y los criterios y metodologías han cambiado con los años. La falta de robustez hace que la interpretación de estos mapas sea confusa y poco operativa. En este trabajo repasamos sucintamente las tentativas por plasmar en un mapa este complejo problema medioambiental, analizamos sus dificultades y mostramos las últimas tendencias. El último Atlas Mundial de Desertificación, publicado en 2018 por la Comisión Europea, renuncia a ello y propone un enfoque alternativo. Su propuesta es identificar aquellos lugares que pueden ser más proclives a la degradación al coincidir en ellos una serie de factores que amenazan el equilibro entre el uso de recursos y su regeneración. La creciente disponibilidad de recursos cartográficos abre las puertas a nuevos enfoques. Sin embargo, este enorme potencial de datos debe conjugarse con una clara concepción del problema, distinguiendo entre mapear el estado de desertificación o su riesgo y determinando, con la mayor objetividad posible, los umbrales de degradación que dan lugar a una degradación persistente.Desertification is a complex and multi-faceted phenomenon. There have been many attempts to map it. However, none of the approaches used over the years has been consolidated, and the criteria and methodologies have changed over the years. This lack of robustness makes the interpretation of these maps confusing and not very operational. In this paper we briefly review the attempts to map this complex environmental problem, analyze its difficulties and show the latest trends. The latest World Atlas of Desertification, published in 2018 by the European Commission, renounces this and proposes an alternative approach. Its proposal is to identify those sites that may be most prone to degradation due to a combination of factors that threaten the balance between resource use and regeneration. The increasing availability of spatial databases opens the door to new approaches.
