This article investigates cultural expression of gender in Florence del XIV century. It examines how the biological rhythm of women was perceived and how this vision can help us understand the ways in which medieval didactic discourse constructed relations between man and women. Significant examples of vernacular literature of instruction – the Reggimento e costumi di donna of Francesco da Barberino – are explored. What teachings governed every stages of life, including death, of Florentine? The art of involving the female public, within the framework of humoral theory and patriarchal order, presupposed common values for the members of all social strata in a country, where women were underrepresented in the cemeteries too.L'articolo indaga ...
