The praxis of the Conservation of material heritage in the Brazilian and Spanish contexts from the perspective of Social Representations.

The conservation of movable cultural property is an important field of heritage protection, which aims to guarantee future generations the preservation of the values and objects that underlie the identity of social groups. Like any specialized area, it is a field influenced by different theoretical orientations and benchmarks. The objective of this dissertation went far beyond analyzing the influence of these schools and their specific weight. The central focus was to examine the conceptions underlying the praxis of conservators-restorers in two distinct contexts: Spain and Brazil. The task brought out the valuations of these professionals concerning the definition of Good Conservation as well as that of its opposite, Inadequate Conservation. The comparison of the praxis of conservators-restorers in both Spanish and Brazilian contexts was made possible thanks to an international exchange (doctoral stay) scholarship granted by CAPES. The study included a total of 51 semi-structured interviews, 29 of them in Brazil and 22 in Spain. The analysis of the empirical material revealed a dense source of information and data that were organized and analyzed with the NVivo software. There are more converging aspects than diverging ones between the data collected on each side of the Atlantic. Nevertheless, some aspects stand out. In both countries, Good Conservation is guided by compliance with the Code of Ethics, respect for cultural property and its history, and compliance with the classical criteria in the area, especially the principle of least intervention. That represents 44% of the accounts in Brazil and 60% in Spain. The perceptions regarding the opposite concept of Inadequate Conservation were even more expressive: 64% of Brazilian interviewees defined it as discrediting ethics, disrespect for the cultural property and its history, and non-compliance with the classical criteria. Among the Spanish interviewees, this idea reached the expressive mark of 71%. On the other hand, both countries suffer from unqualified practice, the low social value of the profession, and great difficulty in organizing the category, which still lacks professional regulation. As for the theoretical models, the so-called 'critical restoration' seems to prevail in both countries. However, critical reflection, which is the basis of contemporary thought, was surprisingly not an idea manifested among the Spanish interviewees. In summary, the great merit of this dissertation is based on three main elements. Firstly, it sheds light on the objectivities and subjectivities that are hidden in the daily lives of workers in this profession. Secondly, it compares two distinct contexts, that of Brazil and that of Spain. Thirdly, it makes use of a unique heuristic resource that is well suited to the nature of the subject matter, namely, the theory of social representations, an effective tool that has been widely used by the various disciplines that make up the fields of Applied Social Sciences and the Human Sciences.Sem bolsaA Conservação dos bens culturais móveis é um importante campo da proteção do patrimônio, que visa garantir às gerações futuras a preservação dos valores e dos objetos em que se assenta a identidade dos grupos sociais. Como qualquer área especializada, trata-se de um terreno que segue a influência de distintas orientações teóricas e marcos de referência. O objetivo desta tese foi muito além de analisar a influência destas escolas e o seu peso específico. O foco central foi no sentido de examinar as concepções subjacentes à práxis dos conservadores-restauradores em dois âmbitos distintos: Espanha e Brasil. A tarefa fez aflorar as valorações destes profissionais no que tange à definição do que é uma Boa Conservação e do seu oposto, a Conservação Inadequada. Comparar a práxis do conservador-restaurador nos dois âmbitos espanhol e brasileiro foi possível graças à realização de uma missão internacional (doutorado sanduíche) proporcionada em virtude do apoio da CAPES. O estudo envolveu a realização de 51 entrevistas no total, mediante o uso de roteiro semiestruturado, sendo 29 no Brasil e 22 na Espanha. A análise do material empírico revelou uma fonte densa de informações e dados que foram organizados e analisados através do software NVivo. Há mais aspectos convergentes do que divergentes entre os depoimentos colhidos nos dois lados do Atlântico. Não obstante, alguns aspectos se sobressaem. O que pauta a Boa Conservação em ambos os países é a observância ao Código de Ética, o respeito dado aos bens culturais e sua trajetória e o cumprimento dos critérios clássicos da área, em especial do princípio da intervenção mínima. No caso brasileiro, representa 44% dos depoimentos, na Espanha, chega a 60%. O sentido inverso se mostrou ainda mais expressivo: 64% dos entrevistados brasileiros atribui ao desprestígio à ética, ao desrespeito ao bem cultural e sua trajetória e ao descumprimento aos critérios clássicos, o conceito de Conservação Inadequada. Dentre os espanhóis, a manifestação dessa ideia atinge a expressiva marca de 71%. Por outro lado, os dois países sofrem do intrusismo laboral, da exígua valorização social e de grande dificuldade de organização da categoria que ainda hoje carece da regulamentação profissional. Quanto aos modelos teóricos, o chamado ‘restauro crítico’ parece preponderar em ambos. Entretanto a reflexão crítica, base que sustenta o pensamento contemporâneo, não foi uma ideia manifestada dentre os espanhóis, o que foi visto com surpresa. Em síntese, o grande mérito desta tese se assenta em três elementos básicos. Em primeiro lugar, por trazer à tona as objetividades, mas sobretudo as subjetividades que se ocultam no cotidiano dos operadores desse mètier; em segundo lugar, por realizar um estudo comparativo que propõe o cotejo de dois contextos distintos, representados, de um lado, pelo Brasil e, de outro, pela Espanha. Em terceiro lugar, por fazer uso de um recurso heurístico singular e bastante adequado para a natureza do objeto de pesquisa, qual seja, a teoria das representações sociais, uma ferramenta eficaz que vem sendo largamente utilizada pelas diversas disciplinas que integram o campo das Ciências Sociais Aplicadas e das Ciências Humanas
