Graduate recital in bassoon

Includes recorded audio files in WAV and MP3 formats, 62:43 in length.Just as Heitor Villa-Lobos gathers themes and\ud idioms for compositional development, I have summoned\ud together on this program a collage of idioms,\ud styles and periods of music for artistic development.\ud The compositions I have selected will be\ud transmitted via my own development.\ud The Sonata in F minor for bassoon and piano\ud of Georg Phillip Telemann (1681-1767) pays tribute\ud to, and evokes the stylistic idiom of the Baroque\ud Era. The expressive character of the Andante cantabile\ud and the Andante, along with the pulsing, unrelenting\ud verve of the Allegro moderato and the\ud Vivace combine to prove this jewel an appropriate\ud commencement to any recital. Through this piece\ud the bassoon quickly establishes its facile ability\ud in attaining varying "modes of affection."\ud The Rhapsodx for unaccompanied bassoon by\ud Willson Osborne compliments the program with its\ud less rigid, rhapsodic character. This composition\ud gives the bassoonist a significant opportunity to\ud display its subtler qualities in all registers,\ud from agitate to tranquillo. Now eschewing the terraced\ud dynamics of the Sonata in F Minor, the Osborne\ud Rhapsody roams with molto rubato through a cobweb\ud of polymetric changes. Nevertheless, the piece remains\ud contiguous in its quasi-sonata-allegro form.\ud In Bachianas Brasileiras No. 6 by Heitor Villa-\ud Lobos (1887-1959), the bassoon finds itself in duet\ud with the flute. This suite, dated from 1938, is\ud the only one of this series composed in the form of\ud chamber music. The best known of the set being the\ud Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 for soprano and eight\ud celli. This combination of two instruments was\ud meant to suggest the old Brasilian serenade for two \ud instruments; however, Villa-Lobos substitutes the\ud bassoon for the ophicleide so as to arrive at a\ud more ???Bachian" spirit. While imbuing this composition\ud with an improvisatory temperament, as in\ud serenade singing, the artists keep the music alive\ud through vigorous, primitive rhythms. The "Bachian"\ud atmosphere of this piece clearly links it with a\ud neo-baroque image, and consequently to the Sonata\ud in F Minor. Tts improvisatory impression, more \ud over, lends a nice compliment to the rubato feeling\ud of the Rhansodx of Osborne. (See more in text.
