Graduate recital in bass trombone

Although the bass trombone has been in use in various stages of development for centuries, its rich sonorities have not received adequate compositional attention until recently in musical history. Perhaps the most popular method for filling this void has been to substitute existing literature for musically comparable instruments. Dance and Aria by David Ashley White was composed for a tubist???s student recital at the University of Houston at the suggestion of William Rose, Professor of Tuba at the university and Principal Tuba in the Houston Symphony Orchestra. This piece may be performed with equal effectiveness by bass trombone, tenor trombone, or euphonium. In conjunction with the substitution of instrumental literature for performance on the base trombone, vocal literature also provides a great wealth of unearthed musical treasures. The melodic qualities of composers such as George Frederic Handel lend themselves well to the lyrical qualities of the bass trombone. (See more in text.
