O campo CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning): definições, escopo e abrangência

One of the only areas of study that has a specific field to study its relationship with technology is the language teaching area. This field is called Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). CALL is considered part of Second Language Acquisition studies (Blake, 2008; Chambers, 2010), i.e., it is a young branch of Applied Linguistics (Beatty, 2010; Chapelle, 2006). It is interdisciplinary in nature and it is influenced by and connected to many other fields and disciplines. Since it is a new field (Crystal, 2010), it is a sphere of language teaching which is somewhat fragmented and that moves simultaneously in different directions (Levy, 1997). The purpose of this article is to describe and specify the CALL field. First, it deals with the initial relationship between language teaching and technology describing the main perspectives under which technology is seen in the area. Following that, the acronym CALL and the opinions and controversies related to the use of this nomenclature are explained. Finally, definitions of what the field CALL is and what it embraces are provided. Researchers and work on CALL in Brazil are scarce (Reis, 2010). Therefore, it is clear the need to fill in this gap. It is essential that Brazilian language teaching professionals become aware of the existence of the field, its aims and scope.Key words: language teaching, technology, CALL.Uma das únicas áreas de estudos que possui um campo específico para estudar a relação com a tecnologia é a área de ensino de línguas. Esse campo é chamado de Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). CALL é considerado parte da área de estudos Aquisição de Segunda Língua (Blake, 2008; Chambers, 2010) e, portanto, um ramo jovem da Linguística Aplicada (Beatty, 2010; Chapelle, 2006). É, por natureza, um campo de estudos interdisciplinar que sofre a influência e está ligado a diversos outros campos e disciplinas. Por ser um campo novo (Crystal, 2010), é uma esfera do ensino de línguas que ainda está fragmentada e se move para diferentes direções ao mesmo tempo (Levy, 1997). O objetivo deste artigo é descrever e especificar o campo CALL. O ponto de partida é a relação inicial entre ensino de línguas e tecnologias, quando são mostradas as principais perspectivas sob as quais a tecnologia é vista na área. Explica-se a seguir o acrônimo CALL e asdiscussões e controvérsias relacionadas à utilização dessa nomenclatura. Por fim, são apresentadas definições do que é e abrange o campo CALL. São poucos os pesquisadores e os trabalhos sobre CALL no Brasil (Reis, 2010), ficando clara, portanto, a necessidade de se suprir essa lacuna. É essencial que os profissionais da área tenham conhecimento da existência do campo, do seu escopo e de sua abrangência.Palavras-chave: ensino de línguas, tecnologia, CALL
