Current knowledge about the influence of estrogen on migraine among women in their reproductive age

JOHDANTO: Tämä opinnäytetyö kattaa tietoa estrogeenin vaikutuksista lisääntymisiässä olevien naisten migreenin ilmaantuvuuteen. Migreeni on päänsäryn tyyppi, jolle on ominaista voimakas sykkivä kipu pääosin toisella puolella päätä. Migreeni on myös maailman kolmanneksi yleisin sairaus. Migreenin kaksi päätyyppiä ovat aurallinen migreeni ja auraton migreeni. TAVOITTEET: Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena on kerätä tietoa estrogeenitasoista kuukautiskierron aikana ja estrogeenintasojen vaihteluiden vaikutuksesta migreenin ilmaantuvuuden ymmärtämiseksi, sekä sairaudesta kärsivien potilaiden auttamiseksi. Menetelmät: Ajankohtaista kirjallisuutta etsittiin kahdesta tietokannasta. Haun keskeiset termit muotoiltiin populaatio-, altistumis- ja tulos (PEO) -lähestymistapaa käyttäen. Vaihtoehtoiset hakutermit muodostettiin tärkeimmistä avainsanoista varmistaakseen, että kaikki asiaankuuluva kirjallisuus löytyi. TULOKSET: Katsauksessa löydettiin runsaasti todisteita, jotka viittaavat estrogeenitasojen ja migreenin esiintyvyyden väliseen moduloivaan suhteeseen. Näitä käsiteltiin kolmessa ryhmässä: kalsitoniinigeeniin liittyvä peptidi (CGRP), ehkäisy ja raskaus. Lisäksi katsauksen tekijöitä on vain kaksi, mikä rajoitti haettavissa olevien tietokantojen määrää.INTRODUCTION: The review covers information about the effects of estrogen on the incidence of migraine among women of reproductive age. Migraine is a type of headache characterized by severe throbbing pain mostly on one side of the head. Migraine is also listed as the third most prevalent disease globally. The two main types of migraine are migraine with aura and migraine without aura. OBJECTIVES: The review aims to gather knowledge about estrogen level fluctuations during the menstrual cycle and the effect of fluctuations on migraine incidence to better understand the condition and help patients who suffer from the disease. METHODS: A search of the current literature was carried out in two databases. The key terms for the search were formulated using the population, exposure, and outcome (PEO) approach. Alternative search terms were formed from the main primary key terms in order to ensure that all relevant was found. RESULTS: The review found ample evidence pointing to a modulating relationship between estrogen levels and migraine incidence. These were covered in three teams: calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), contraception, and pregnancy. In all, most of the articles showed that fluctuations in estrogen levels led to an increase in migraine incidence. LIMITATIONS: Appraisal of the twenty selected articles found a significant amount to be of low quality. This makes the findings of the work less definitive.
