The Avignon Popes and their Manuscripts. During the whole fourteenth century (1305-1405) the papal fiefdom stood in Avignon and nine Popes reigned there. They contributed, each in his personal way, to the constitution of the papal library. This collec¬ tion started from nothing but diverse acquisitions, gifts to the Popes, arrivals from the legacy of prelates, as well as the manufacturing of manuscripts in the workshops of the palace or of some cloisters, or by crafstmen of Avignon, made its amazing growth possible. John XXII became the first promoter of the library while Clement VI and Gregory XI then focused on its acquisitions and its administration.
