Manuscripts of Provincial Councils and Synodal Laws in Southern French Dioceses. The Fourth Lateran council had requested that each year a provincial council should be convened the decisions of which would afterwards be transmitted and adopted at the time of the diocesan synods. In fact, the study of manuscripts now availables show that the provincial councils, convened at varying times, are only known through the episcopal prescriptions, the synodal laws. Few manuscripts of these synodal laws have been kept, but nevertheless we have at our disposal a good many representative handbooks, namely the synodal books of the thirteenth century.
