Les manuscrits des conciles provinciaux et des statuts synodaux des diocèses du Midi de la France

Manuscripts of Provincial Councils and Synodal Laws in Southern French Dioceses. The Fourth Lateran council had requested that each year a provincial council should be convened the decisions of which would afterwards be transmitted and adopted at the time of the diocesan synods. In fact, the study of manuscripts now availables show that the provincial councils, convened at varying times, are only known through the episcopal prescriptions, the synodal laws. Few manuscripts of these synodal laws have been kept, but nevertheless we have at our disposal a good many representative handbooks, namely the synodal books of the thirteenth century. Without entirely corresponding to conciliar wishes, these compilations intended for parish priests, may be considered as good pieces of evidence of pastoral action at the end of the Middle Ages.Le IVe concile du Latran avait demandé que fût convoqué chaque année un concile provincial dont les décisions seraient ensuite diffusées et adoptées lors des synodes diocésains. En fait, il résulte de l’examen des manuscrits actuellement conservés que les conciles provinciaux, irrégulièrement convoqués, ne sont connus que par l’intermédiaire des prescriptions épiscopales, les statuts synodaux. Peu de manuscrits de ces derniers textes normatifs ont été conservés, mais nous disposons néanmoins d’un certain nombre de manuels représentatifs, à savoir les livres synodaux du XIIIe siècle. Sans pleinement répondre aux orientations conciliaires, ces recueils, destinés aux prêtres des paroisses, peuvent être considérés comme de bons témoins de l’action pastorale à la fin du Moyen Age.Avril Joseph.
