It is commonly believed that the backbone texts of Brabantine historiography in the vernacular – the Brabantsche yeesten (1316-1350), its later Voortzetting (ca. 1430) and the Alder excellenste cronyke van Brabant (1498) – played a decisive role in the development of Brabantine historical consciousness. They were also highly regarded in well-informed circles in the Duchy, such as urban administrations, monastic institutions and among the nobility. However, the question how historiographical knowledge reached less privileged audiences, for example in urban centres, has not yet been definitively answered.
