Although early modern journals have frequently been used as sources in historical research, we know very little about the way they were actually made. In this article, which is part of a PhD research, we will meet some of the people who were responsible for the Gazette van Antwerpen, a newspaper that appeared throughout the 18th century. For the first time biographical data of the publishers and editors are brought together. Jacques Van der Sanden, who was editor of the Gazette van Antwerpen for almost forty years (1762-1799), produced an important personal document that has been ignored by historians for over a century. It provides a unique insight into the back- room of this early modern newspaper
