Um dos grandes diferenciais dos materiais semicondutores orgânicos é sua habilidade de suportar, em determinadas situações, transporte eletrônico e iônico simultaneamente. Essa habilidade possibilitou tais condutores mistos a serem aplicados com grande sucesso em dispositivos de interesse biológico. Um exemplo é o transistor eletroquímico orgânico (OECT). Esse dispositivo é formado por uma camada semicondutora orgânica, delimitada por dois eletrodos (fonte e dreno), que forma o canal do transistor.
