Statistical mechanics now explains the phase transitions occurring in simple substances at equilibrium. However, the glass transition, which is universally observed when a liquid is cooled or compressed quickly enough to avoid crystallization is still a source of intense research. At the mean-field level, the slowing down of glassy systems is the consequence of the emergence of a rough free energy landscape with an exponentially large number of minima corresponding to metastable states. These metastable states also dictate the thermodynamic properties of supercooled liquids as well as the out-of-equilibrium behaviour of glasses.
